Mohit Agarwal

Mohit is currently a PhD student in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey working under Dr. Assimina A. Pelegri in Advanced Materials and Structures Laboratory (AMSL). He is part of the soft-materials group, and his research involves developing novel computational models using finite element models (FEM) and machine learning (ML) to study brain white matter, bio-materials tissue response, and traumatic brain injuries (TBI). He is working to develop computational frameworks that leverage data science models to predict material properties and aid in material discovery. As part of thesis a significant effort has been put into developing hybrid computational models for soft materials which combine FEM and ML to characterize material properties subjected to various load types. These models will pave the way for digital thread and digital twins for materials research.

As additional research interests, Mohit has been involved in the hard materials group as well in AMSL. As part of this experimental research endeavors, he has developed, processed, and characterized advanced nanocomposites materials using novel material processing techniques. His experimental projects have involved manufacturing and characterizing graphene-based nano-composites for 3D printing (SLA), high-performance polymers (PEEK, PSU) and G-epoxy resins which have found application in defense, aerospace, and medical device industries. Prior to joining Rutgers, Mohit worked as Senior R&D Project engineer and Project Manager in the medical devices industry. He successfully led and contributed cross-functional teams to launch medical devices and surgical instruments for shoulder, knee, and hip portfolios. He has also held leadership positions in student bodies at Rutgers-Graduate Students Association (GSA) as the Busch Campus Events Director. He has been in the executive leadership team of Mechanical Engineering Graduate Association (MEGA) for past 4 years and held several roles during his tenure: First-year student representative (2019-20), Secretary (2020-21), and Vice-President(2021-22) and acting president (2022-present).
